RECALL: Black Hawk Dog Food Has Fears Of Mold Contamination


Dog food company MasterPet has issued a voluntary and immediate recall for 9 batches of their Black Hawk Dog Food because of possible mold contamination. This recall was for their food that was manufactured between August and November 2019. Their ongoing quality control process helped them discover that some products were developing mold, so they pulled those products right away.

Which Products Are Affected?

This voluntary recall covered a few different sizes and formulas of the Black Hawk Dog Food, all of which were manufactured between August and November 2019. Here are the foods that were affected:

  • Black Hawk Adult Chicken and Rice (3kg, 10kg, and 20kg)
  • Black Hawk Adult Lamb and Rice (3kg and 20kg)
  • Black Hawk Adult Large Breed Chicken and Rice (20kg only)
  • Black Hawk Puppy Large Breed Chicken and Rice (20kg only)

Checking Your Dog Food

The best way to know if your dog food was affected by this recall is to check the best-before date. This date can be found on the back of the packaging toward the center. It’s stamped horizontally in black near the ingredient list. To check the specific best-before dates for this recall, click here.

“To date we have had no reports of illness in any animals and if product is affected, the mold is very obvious to consumers,” said MasterPet.

So, if your product is affected, the mold should be very easy to spot. However, even if there is no mold in the food, it could still be contaminated if it has one of the listed best-before dates. Therefore, you should get rid of the food either way just in case. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your dog’s health.

What Should You Do if You Have the Affected Food?

If you have one of the dog foods that was affected in this recall, you should stop feeding it to your dogs immediately and return it to where you purchased it from. Unaffected products will still be available for purchase, but all affected products have been removed from the shelves.

Also, make sure to disinfect anything that the contaminated food touched. This includes food bowls, flooring, utensils, toys, and anything else that could have potentially come into contact with the food. Make sure to also thoroughly wash your hands after handling the food. Even if you didn’t see mold in your food, it’s best to be cautious in these situations.
