One of the best ways to help a dog suffering from arthritis is through proper nutrition. It’s important to feed arthritic pets a diet that fosters a healthy weight and includes ingredients that reduce swelling and inflammation. These pumpkin and turmeric dog treats for arthritis are made with some superfood ingredients to help dogs suffering with sore joints.
Curcumin, a substance found in turmeric, has been proven to help reduce inflammation in canines in recent studies. It has also been shown to reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Likewise, pumpkin is packed with beta carotene, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C, which are all inflammation fighters. These are limited ingredient dog treats for arthritis that are suitable for almost every pet. If you have questions about what to feed your dog, be sure to consult your veterinarian.
Recipe: Pumpkin Turmeric Dog Treats for Arthritis
- 1 lb. ground venison
- 1 cup oats
- 1 can organic pumpkin puree
- 75-100 mg. of turmeric for every 5 lbs. of body weight
- 2 eggs with shells
- 1 cup ground flax seed
Preheat your oven to 250˚ F.
Combine all of the ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Mix completely until a soft dough forms. This recipe should yield 45 treats. Each treat will require about 1 tbsp. of dough.
If you’d like to cut out shaped biscuits, you can roll the dough out on a floured surface until it’s about 1/4″ thick. I took the easy way out and used the dough to fill mini muffin tins. You could also use small silicone molds.
Bake the treats for about 3 hours. They should be completely dried out before you remove them from the oven. Your dog should only receive one of these treats per day.
Homemade dog treats have no preservatives, so it’s best to store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. These treats should keep for about 2 weeks this way. You can also freeze them in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
